OUTDOOR MILITARY FITNESS TRAINING

Rob Blair founded the Commando Temple. He is a former Royal Marines Commando and a qualified Mountain Leader. The outdoor training programme at the Commando Temple Peak District draws directly on that background – not as branding, but as the actual basis for how coaching is delivered.
The landscape here is part of the training environment — from Black Rocks and the Derwent Valley on our doorstep to the gritstone of Robin Hood’s Stride, the trails around Bakewell and the Monsall Trail, and the open moorland out toward Sterndale Moor. The Amber Valley alone offers multiple sites within easy reach of the Chesterfield base.
The Commando Temple has been preparing people for military selection and service since its founding in 2012. At the Peak District base, that programme continues — and the terrain here is well suited to it.
Military fitness preparation covers more than cardiovascular conditioning. Load-carrying capacity, movement efficiency under weight, pacing strategy over long efforts, and the mental discipline to keep going when the physical work gets hard — all of it is trained, deliberately and progressively.
The Peak District is trail running country. The hills, the moorland and the technical paths that connect them are within reach of every session. Conditioning for trail running differs from road running preparation in ways that matter: the demands on legs and hips are greater and less predictable, upper body conditioning becomes relevant over longer efforts with poles or a pack, and the ability to move confidently on uneven ground is a trainable skill, not a fixed quality.
Preparing for time in the mountains involves more than fitness. Load-carrying capacity, shoulder and hip stability for awkward and unpredictable ground, the judgement to pace yourself correctly over long days — all of it can be developed in training, and all of it makes time in the hills safer and more rewarding.
Rob’s Mountain Leader qualification covers more than fitness. Navigation, weather judgement, and managing exposure on technical ground are all part of how sessions here are shaped. This isn’t simulated adversity — it’s the same judgement that keeps people safe on a genuine expedition, built into training that happens to also make you stronger
People preparing for military selection. Trail runners training for events and races in the hills. Hill walkers who want to move more comfortably and confidently over longer days. Mountaineers building toward demanding objectives. People who simply want to get fit in a way that makes direct sense for the landscape they live in and the things they want to do in it.
Building the strength this terrain demands starts in the gym — our Calisthenics and Kettlebell sessions in Chesterfield build the raw capability that outdoor and military training then puts to work.
The Commando Temple was built on the idea that training should mean something beyond the gym. Physical strength and mental resilience develop together — and they develop fastest when the training is connected to real goals in the real world. The outdoor programme at the Commando Temple Peak District is built around that principle. Whether your objective is a selection course, a race, a summit or simply moving better in the hills, the coaching here is shaped around what you are actually trying to do.
We also offer powerlifting in Chesterfield along with a range of other training types. The military fitness training programme in London may also be of interest if you are in the capital.
