What is a Kru in Muay Thai?

What Is a Kru?

In Muay Thai, a trainer isn’t just a coach. A Kru is something more.

A Kru is a guide, a mentor, and a guardian of tradition. The word “Kru” comes from the Sanskrit guru (meaning teacher) and it carries with it deep respect. When someone earns the title Kru, it’s not just a reflection of skill. It’s a reflection of character.

Becoming a Kru

You don’t become a Kru overnight. In Thailand, it’s not about certificates or qualifications – it’s about experience, reputation, and values.

Most Krus were former fighters. Many trained from childhood, fought in Bangkok stadiums, and returned to the gym years later to pass on what they learned. A Kru earns their title informally, often bestowed by their own Kru, by a respected figure, or by recognition within the gym community.

Some are affectionately called “Kru Yai” — senior teacher — especially if they’ve trained champions or taught for decades.

The Role of a Kru
A Kru teaches more than technique. They shape discipline, humility, and heart. In many Thai gyms, a Kru is like a second parent — they push you hard, but they care deeply about your growth.

A good Kru can:

  • Sharpen your tools
  • Correct your flaws
  • Instil the mindset of a fighter

And they do it all while upholding the traditions of the art.

Wai Kru and the Ceremony of Respect

Not to be confused with the wai, which is a gesture of respect that everyone uses in Thailand in most daily interactions. The Wai Kru Ram Muay on the other hand, is a dance performed before every fight. It’s a way for the fighter to honour their Kru, family, gym, and the art itself. It’s also a sign of humility — an open acknowledgement that no fighter stands alone.

To see a Thai fighter bow at their Kru’s feet before a bout is powerful. It’s not weakness — it’s gratitude.

“In a world where martial arts are sometimes treated as just fitness classes, Muay Thai stands apart. Sure, we acknowledge that there are some Muay Thai classes that miss the mark.  However, behind every serious fighter is a Kru — someone who passed the torch with care.

To train Muay Thai under a true Kru is to learn more than just how to fight. It’s to learn how to carry yourself in and out of the ring.”  Kru Marisz, The Commando Temple
